The first count of votes for Maranoa Ward yesterday puts Chris Pattas well ahead of other candidates, including the incumbent councillor. If this trend continues he will be the next Councillor for Maranoa Ward.
Note that this only the first count. The final result will be known after the counting the second batch of votes and preference distribution.
I met Chris Pattas during the campaign. He is a genuine independent. We share similar values and priorities. If he is elected I am confident he will represent the residents of Maranoa and Boroondara well.
I would like to thank the volunteers who helped during our campaign for Maranoa Ward with distributing flyers and displaying corflute signs.
I also thank the many residents of Maranoa Ward who encouraged me and provided information on what they think Boroondara Council can be doing better. If elected, I will follow up on all matters that have been raised with me.
Together, we can help Boroondara to become an even better place for people to live, work, build businesses and raise their families.
Special thanks to the Tom and Peter Mornement of Bin 3 Cafe & Cellars in Balwyn East Shopping Centre. Their coffee, food and chats were much appreciated when I stopped there several times while delivering flyers.
It was good to meet and chat with and Chris Pattas and Jackie Carter who were also candidates for Maranoa Ward.
With voting now closed, the following counts will be conducted for Maranoa Ward:
Thu 31 Oct: Extraction of ballots for Group A and count to first preference
Wed 6 Nov: Extraction of ballots for Group B and count to first preference
Fri 8 Nov: Preference distribution
The final result will be declared on Friday 15 November.
I am collecting all corflute posters for recycling.
Residents of Maranoa have recently raised the following suggestions and concerns with me about what Council could be doing better:
"Some developers are illegally removing heritage and significant trees when they clear blocks to build new houses. They regard the $20,000 fine per tree as a "cost of doing business". The fine for illegal tree removal should be increased to $50,000. This issue has been raised by over 10 residents.
"Reduce the high fees sporting clubs pay to use Council pavilions - this is the major cost for my local sporting club."
Responsible spending - a long term resident told me the small court she lives in that has "been resurfaced four times over the last 10 years when it didn't need it, while potholes on other streets are not fixed."
"Parking in narrow local streets is causing safety issues - some narrow streets in Balwyn with cars parked on both sides is creating traffic hazards. This has been reported to Council but nothing has been done about it."
"Local streets often have too much traffic."
"Trial a 'Sow, Don't Mow' program that encourages the development of native grassland on selected parkland areas and some nature strips." - I support this
"The replacement of the Kew Recreation Centre is overdue, well over budget and will use gas boilers that are polluting and expensive to run rather than electric heat pumps."
"There is not enough consultation with the community about reducing community spaces and spending money on rebuilding others."
"Greythorn Rd and Balwyn Rd bike lanes are particularly scary as parked cars mean I have to go out around them into traffic" - safety improvements are needed for these bike lanes.
"We are in our 70s and hoping to 'age in place' but worry about local government opting out of all services."
"Why are there no EV chargers in Balwyn and elsewhere in Maranoa Ward?" - we need some, e.g. at Balwyn Recreation Centre
"Why are the lights at the new Balwyn Road pedestrian crossing not working?" - the power utility is taking a long time to schedule the work to connect them.
"We need integrity and genuine representation from our Councillor." Cr Cynthia Watson ran as the Liberal Candidate for Ringwood in the last Victorian Election and refused to step down from Boroondara Council during the election. She is more interested in her political career than representing Maranoa Ward on Council."
"Why does the council want to demolish Balwyn Leisure Centre?" It is less than 20 years old. With the debacle that is Kew Recreation Centre we need all leisure centres we currently have." - I played basketball there many years ago. Council spent $500,000 in 2023 renovating a section of the Balwyn Leisure Centre to include a new kindergarten room and bathroom, converting part of the old tennis court. I would seek clarification on whether the entire centre should be demolished. We need to make sure that a new building is not just an expensive vanity project.
"A new path is needed from Clifton Street to the Winfield Road Playground." The existing path from Winfield Road is too steep for many people.
"Broad-leafed Privet (Ligustrum Lucidum) spread in Grey-headed Flying Fox and bird droppings is a problem". I will take action to pursue a resolve this.
"There are opportunities for improving food security and access to healthy food by adopting urban farming. We can also improve waste management to make sure residents recycle correctly and educate them to recycle soft plastics from diverting their disposal to landfills". I will take action and support both of these.

A reminder that voting in the Boroondara election closes 6pm this Friday 25 October. 🙂
Make sure you have posted your ballot back in the envelope provided before then, noting that voting is compulsory.
Or you can drop your envelope to Chambly Hall, 405 Camberwell Rd, Camberwell VIC 3124.
A resident contacted me about:
Improving food security and access to healthy food by adopting urban farming.
Improving waste management by educating residents about reducing waste and providing services for improved recycling, including soft plastics.
I will advocate for and support for better use of nature strips and creating pocket farms and community gardens and improving waste management.
Several residents have raised concerns about activities at some building sites impacting the streetscape and footpaths. Residents have reported rule infringements to the council but often the rules are not enforced. Below are two examples.
If elected I will request that action be taken to enforce rules regarding building sites and footpaths.
A resident contacted me today about vehicles speeding in Gordon Street, Balwyn.
Whilst I am submitting this request I hold little hope of any response as I have over the previous 37 years!
Gordon Street Balwyn between Nott Street and Balwyn road suffers constantly from fools in high powered vehicles exceeding the 50 mph limit by twice that limit. This is a residential area but the flouting of the signposted speed limit is frightening!!! We are a group of concerned residents and every time we bring this problem to the attention of the council we get a week of a speed indicating trailer parked in the street!!
As a group of concerned residents we have discussed parking large vehicles and trailers. To slow the bastards down! What about some speed humps if it doesn’t impact on Council coffers set aside for Sister City travel funds!!
The City of Boroondara is responsible for local streets and roads, including Gordon Street. If elected I will raise these concerns about safety on Gordon Street and request an appropriate remedy. Our streets should safe and pleasant for people to live, work, play and move in.
I participated in the online Lighter Footprints candidate forum where I had the opportunity to discuss climate change related policies and concerns with residents of Maranoa Ward. Jackie Ward was the other candidate in the forum.
There was an "empty chair" for Cr Cynthia Watson who was an apology.
Well done to Lighter Footprints for organising a fantastic forum. It was great to hear from residents about their concerns and hear their suggestions.
Here is a video of the forum for Maranoa Ward.
I spoke at the City of Boroondara Council Urban Planning Delegated Committee Meeting on 7 October about the Victorian state government’s latest contentious plan for Camberwell Junction Activity Centre.
I strongly supported the Council Officer's recommendations to the meeting.
The very short engagement process with the community is not acceptable.
See Camberwell Junction for more details.
Ballots packs are being sent by mail in Boroondara this week Mon 7 Oct - Thu 10 Oct.
I have prepared this how to vote card after speaking to other candidates and considering their values and political party affiliations.
If the ballot pack doesn't arrive by Tue 15 Oct you can request a replacement pack. For more information see Voting.
If elected as a councillor I will focus on local issues and will strive to keep residents better informed about Council's services, activities and decisions.
Local residents are asking for safe and pleasant streets that enable people to live fulfilling lives while safely moving through their local communities.
I have signed the Streets People Love pledge that includes:
Increasing greenery, including tree planting and pocket park projects
Advocacy for improved public transport
30 km/h speed limits in some built up areas
Building quality protected bike lanes
Advocacy to State Government to ensure accessible tram stops are rolled out
Support new rail trail connections including the Hawthorn to Box Hill Trail

I attended the community forum held by Boroondara Council on Sunday 15 September about the Victorian government state government’s latest plan for Camberwell Junction Activity Centre.
The current Council's response to the latest plans is here.
I don't support the proposed significant changes to the Planning Scheme as they stand because:
The impacts on and outcomes in the "Camberwell Junction catchment area" around the Camberwell Junction Activity Centre are ill defined and unclear.
It is unclear how the "streamlined planning process" will work.
If elected I will consult residents and fellow councillors on this.
Why did Council remove "The Birdcage" Parklet outside Bin 3 Cafe and Wine Bar in Balwyn East Shopping Centre?
The Parklet was initated and funded by Council at a cost of $70,000 in November 2020 and was appreciated by local residents as a friendly space to meet and have a break.
During 2023 community consultation 72% of 237 respondents supported footpath widening and retaining the parklet.
Over 2,300 people signed petitions (online and on paper) to keep the parklet
Councillor Officers recommended widening the footpath and making the parklet permanent. You can read the report here.
However, on 8 July 2024, Cr Cynthia Watson (Maranoa Ward) did not put the council officer's motion. Instead she put a motion to remove the parklet. The council voted to remove the parklet, including Cr Watson (8 for, Cr Victor Franco & Cr Wes Gault against), and now its gone.
You can watch the meeting and vote here. Warning, its quite frustrating to watch!
If elected, I will seek to have this decision reviewed.
I attended the recent Victoria Police Neighbourhood Policing Forum in Boroondara in August, where community members heard from police about local issues and community safety. The many police present included a Deputy Chief Commissioner. The police provided updates on family violence, road safety, burglaries and young offenders.
There is an active program to counsel and support troubled youths to divert them from offending.
Police advice included:
Keep all doors and windows locked at all times - most burglaries are opportunistic.
Call 000 for emergencies and immediate police attendance
Report other matters on Crimestoppers or by visiting a local police station.
Follow the Eyewatch - Boroondara Police Service Area Facebook page for updates on local policing and safety matters.
It was a very informative and well attended forum. I recommend you consider attending future forums.
