Environment and climate

Protect our tree canopy and increase it 50% to enhance the ecology, character and amenity of our urban environment.   Canopy trees  provide shade and counter the urban heat island effect.

Increase penalties for developers illegally removing heritage and significant trees when they clear blocks to build new houses. 

Trial a 'Sow, Don't Mow' program that encourages the development of native grassland on selected parkland areas and some nature strips.

Assist residents to install solar panels to reduce their power bills and carbon emissions.

Conduct a community battery and microgrid trial  to provide power to residents during blackouts.

Assist residents to get off gas and move to electricity for hot water and heating.  See Electrify Boroondara for more details.

Provide more EV chargers across Boroondara

Transition the Council vehicle fleet to Electric Vehicles to reduce pollution and emissions.

Provide safe paths and lanes for walking, cycling and other forms of active mobility that provide good exercise that can improve both physical and mental health.

Implement a program to increase the use of ebikes and cargo bikes and provide free e-cargo bike loans similar to the ride and stride initiative in Merribek.

Continue to advocate for the Hawthorn to Box Hill Trail  that will provide  a safe family-friendly bike and walking path to connect local communities and provide safe travel through Hawthorn, Camberwell, Glenferrie Road, Maling Road, Surrey Hills, Mont Albert and Box Hill.
