Here are some opportunities for Maranoa and Boroondara I will focus on.
Improve consultation with residents and improve communication on local issues and Council decisions.
Listen to residents and respect their input.
Boroondara Councillors should represent their residents, not party politics.
Cease gagging questions and debate on Council motions using "I move that the motion be put"
Focus funding on improving and supporting our community.
Review expenditure on IT and facilities. Council has spent $80 million on the Customer First Portal.
The upgrade to the Kew Recreation Centre is 3 years overdue and $20 million over budget.
Stop vanity projects such as demolishing the existing Balwyn Leisure Centre and Kew Library that are functional and enjoyed by the community and spending millions on a new buildings.
Fix potholes in local streets and improve maintenance of footpaths to avoid injuries.
The North East Link project is flawed both from a transport and land use perspective. It is likely that much more road traffic will be being drawn into Boroondara, including Doncaster Road, Greythorn Road, Balwyn Road and Union Road. I will strongly advocate for and pursue appropriate measures to address traffic concerns, noise pollution, health impacts and loss of parkland.
Reduce traffic congestion by improving public transport - extend Tram 48 to the Greythorn shops and provide more frequent bus services.
Provide more public EV chargers for the increasing number of electric vehicles in Boroondara
Make walking and bikes safer and convenient for local trips. Every walking or bike trip is one less car on our roads, especially during school drop off and pick up times.
The Hawthorn to Box Hill Trail will provide a safe family-friendly bike and walking path to connect local communities and provide safe travel through Hawthorn, Camberwell, Glenferrie Road, Maling Road, Surrey Hills, Mont Albert and Box Hill.
Parked cars in Greythorn Rd, Balwyn Rd and Union Road bike lanes force bike riders into traffic. Many people don't feel safe using them.
I advocated for the new pedestrian crossing on Balwyn Road connecting Hislop Park and Gordon Barnard reserve.
Create Parklets (public seating platforms) by converting curbside parking spaces into vibrant community spaces. Note that Council just removed a parklet outside the Bin 3 Cafe And Wine Bar in Balwyn East Shopping Centre!
Provide more community gardens in Maranoa.
Improve food security and access to healthy food by adopting urban farming.
Improve waste management by educating residents about reducing waste and providing services for improved recycling, including soft plastics.
Support our local shopping centres and work with traders to keep them vibrant.
Upgrade the Gordon Barnard Reserve fenced dog play area.
Reduce the speed limit in Greythorn Central shopping strip to 40 km/h to make improve safety.
Support residents to "age in place" and improve aged care services.
Increase penalties for developers illegally removing heritage and significant trees when they clear blocks to build new houses.
Increase our tree canopy to 50% to enhance the ecology, character and amenity of our urban environment. Canopy trees provide shade and counter the urban heat island effect.
Support local groups such as Friends of Greythorn Park to planting and nurture more trees and shrubs
Enable sustainable development whilst protecting built heritage
Assist residents to install solar panels to reduce their power bills and carbon emissions.
Conduct a community battery and microgrid trial to provide power to residents during blackouts.
Assist residents to get off gas and move to electricity for hot water and heating. See Electrify Boroondara for more details.
I will advocate for and support using nature strips for creating pocket farms or native plants.
Boroondara is a safe place to live and work. Council must continue to liaise and work with Victoria Police to ensure our houses and streets are kept safe and secure.
Victoria Police advise that the best security measure is to keep all doors and windows locked
I will liaise with Victoria Police to revitalise Neighbourhood Watch.
