Walking, cycling and other forms of active mobility provide good exercise that can improve both physical and mental health.
Active mobility in all its forms has economic, social, environmental and health benefits including:
Walking is accessible and generally low cost or free.
Cycling is among the most efficient and sustainable means of transportation.
Every walking or cycling trip is one less car on our increasing congested roads.
Keeping a healthy weight
Exercise can prevent serious illness, including heart disease, asthma, diabetes and some forms of cancer
Improved mental health - physical activity can be used to overcome, and even prevent depression and anxiety.
However, not all people have access to safe environments for walking, cycling and wheel-based mobility.
I contributed to the Boroondara Bicycle Strategy 2022 that sets a framework to improve infrastructure and education for cyclists and pedestrians in the City of Boroondara over the next 10 years.
When implemented, the Bicycle Strategy will deliver a network that is:
safe
connected
protected
efficient
appealing to all ages and abilities.
The bicycle network includes off-road paths and on-road links that provide access to a range of destinations. The network will also help make bicycle riding and walking easier and more attractive options for all residents, workers and visitors in Boroondara.
I will continue to advocate for the Hawthorn to Box Hill Trail that will provide a safe family-friendly bike and walking path to connect local communities and provide safe travel through Hawthorn, Camberwell, Glenferrie Road, Maling Road, Surrey Hills, Mont Albert and Box Hill.
I recently advocated to Boroondara council and the state government for the development of the Vicroads site in Kew for much needed affordable housing to also include an extension of the Kew Railway Line Trail and a linear park.
This trail would be used by locals to get to and from Glenferrie Station and for students and staff to get to Kew Primary School, Ruyton Girls School, MLC, Trinity Grammar and Xavier College.
